Talented Bournemouth – The Crumb Factory
Bournemouth is filled with talented entrepreneurs, artists and musicians, honestly, there’s loads of them! Once a month Lotus Photography dedicates a blog to highlight one of these amazing people.
This month is all about cake! I have a gluten allergy, I miss cake, gluten-free cake is usually dry and just bad. I bumped into Sally from The Crumb Factory when she mentioned the many amazing flavours of gluten-free cakes she creates and to be honest, I was sceptical. I have now tried and tested her gluten-free salted caramel cake, oh my word, it is AMAZING!!! After such an amazing cake experience and having worked with her on a recent photo shoot, I thought it was time to do a little feature about her.
What do you do?
I create beautiful bespoke wedding cakes for lovely couples around Dorset, Hampshire and Beyond
How did you get started?
Having worked in an IT role for over 20 years I always knew I had a passion for something more creative. Whilst on maternity leave with my first daughter I started playing around with baking and decorating cakes. I got a lot of compliments about them and often people would say ‘you should do this for a living’ so I did!
In 2010 I created ‘The Crumb Factory’ and the rest is history!
What inspires you?
I find inspiration everywhere, if I see something I think looks pretty I think ‘how can I incorporate this into a cake’. A great example of this is a recent theatre shoot where my main inspo came from the venue itself, with its theatrical theme and moody colours of gold, navy and reds.
What’s been the most unique cake you’ve created?
Probably one from another shoot I was involved in last year at The Larmer Tree Gardens. I was asked to create something different. Having made so many cakes in pretty pastels and pinks with sugar flowers I wanted to create something with an edgier feel. I like to think I succeeded
What do you think 2019 cake trend is going to be?
The biggest trend I’m seeing is ‘Extravagance’. My 2019 diary is filled with 4 and 5 tiered cakes full of textures like ruffles, sequins and glitter. This is also teamed with metallics – silver, gold, rose gold and copper colours.
What’s your favourite flavour?
Champagne and Raspberry is my favourite, I use fresh raspberries in the buttercream filling, which are blended and sieved to remove all the pips. Surely it’s one of your 5 a day right?
[Note to self: Think of another photo shoot I can do with The Crumb Factory and beg her to make a Champagne and Raspberry gluten-free cake. Leave a comment below if you agree!]
How has photography impacted/influenced your business?
I am extremely fortunate to have made some fabulous photography friends who have taken some incredible images of my cakes and given me help and advice on using my own camera.
The last cake I made took 20 hours so capturing all that work in an image is everything!
What’s your motto in life?
You can’t just sit back and expect things to just happen, so my motto would be ‘If you work for it, you can achieve it’
