When I’m not taking photos, I love roller derby! I’m even in the Fresh Meat tryouts for my local team, the Dorset Roller Girls (DRG). My derby name; Snappin’ Lotus.
For those of you who don’t know much about roller derby here’s a quick explanation…
Now before you ask, no you are not allowed to elbow each other in the face. I get asked this a lot, no, no you can’t, really, no, Beard (one of our refs) will tell you off.
Last weekend the DRG organised a Thriller-themed event with players from all over the south coast joining in, such as the Portsmouth Roller Wenches, Southampton City Rollers, Basingstoke Bullets, Royal Windsor Roller Girls and SWAT. Well, I wasn’t going to miss that!
The first bout was mixed teams creating The Dirty Dianas vs The Smooth Criminals. Incredibly fast with amazing tackles.
Bout two was the one we were waiting for, DRG’s Team B’s first ever open game against Southampton City Rollers.
We knew it was going to be good, we knew it was going to be exciting, but nothing prepared us for some of the best blocking I’ve seen, the speed of Fizzle Kicks and an amazing jump over the opposition by Palmergeddon. I won’t bore you with the details, but a score of 294 to 102 is awesome!
